It’s been a minute since we heard any news about Tony Ferguson. After his shocking loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 in May of 2020, the savage took some time out of the spotlight after an extended fight that involved two weight cuts (because Tony will).
At the end of July, he came back to declare again that he was ready to start the climb again after a lightweight title shot.
“You want to give me Conor, you give me Conor,” he told ESPN. ‘You want to give me Poirier, we’ll make it happen, and then we’ll fight for the winner of the Gaethje and Khabib battle. I would like to compete against Khabib, Poirier, McGregor. Those are the three right there. But why? Talent-wise, that’s the reason. Not because of other ways or means. Because of the talent and the athletic respect I have for their talent that they have in this sport. ”
And now it sounds like the UFC is giving him option B: Dustin Poirier.
After UFC on ESPN 15, Dana White answered a question about Ferguson’s next opponent Poirier with a smile and “Probably.”
And now Damon Martin of MMA Fighting confirms that the fight is in the works:
Dana White says Tony Ferguson’s next fight will be “likely” to be Dustin Poirier.
I might add that conversations have been initiated, but last I heard, a deal has not yet been done exactly. Sounds like October. # UFCVegas7

Dustin Poirier smashed tough challenger Dan Hooker just before the end of June, but he sounds like scrap, making him a playmate of Ferguson’s nicknames and on Twitter.
As for Ferguson, he has not commented on the attack since it became public knowledge … probably because he bought too much ‘n’ pound breakdancing with his practice dummy.
Again, this leaves Conor McGregor out in the cold and farther away from a shot at the lighter title than ever. Earlier this month, current 155-pound champion Khabib Nurmagomedov stated that he would be ready to fight McGregor again … if he defeated a top contender like Dustin Poirier. But Conor is currently spending his time training for a 180km water cyclist challenge with the Princess of Monaco to raise awareness for water safety.
Yes.
Dana White recently said that Conor McGregor would not fight in the UFC again in 2020 and that it certainly seems like that is true. But for our hardcores, who really cares if the promotion kills like Poirier vs. Ferguson lights up?
