He said he was on track to win more than 30,000 electoral college votes, pointing out that more than 74 million people voted for his campaign than any other U.S. presidential candidate in history.

Mr. Biden’s appearance was originally planned as a victory speech, but the U.S. TV networks carefully chose to give a general update about the state of the race, rather than declaring them winners.

If he is declared the winner this weekend, his team is likely to begin its transition process on Monday. The New York Times reports that Mr Biden could announce the first senior executives in his potential administration early next week.

The Secret Service has sent reinforcements to Delaware to detail Mr Biden’s security. The Federal Aviation Administration has banned flights over Wilmington’s airspace.

However, there are no indications that Mr Trump will confess to his opponent in the short term.

On Friday afternoon he tweeted, “JB Biden should not falsely claim the presidency.” “I can even make that claim. Legal proceedings have just begun!”
