Typhoon Molaw update: At least 13 killed, dozens missing in Vietnam

A day earlier, 13 people were killed in a landslide in the central province of Kwang, while 40 were missing as rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather at the tail end of the hurricane, the government said.

“We can predict the route of the storm or the amount of rainfall, but we cannot predict when a landslide will occur,” Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said in a statement.

“The road is under deep mud and heavy rains are still hitting the area, but rescue work is being carried out quickly.”

Since the beginning of October, Vietnam has been plagued by storms, heavy rains and floods, which have affected more than ten million people.

The government said Typhoon Molawe – also known as Quinta – left millions without power and damaged 56,000 homes.

Twenty-six fishermen are also missing after their boats sank while trying to return to shore on Tuesday.

Molava has weakened in tropical depression since the landfall on Wednesday and is expected to reach Laos later on Thursday.

Heavy rains of up to 700 millimeters (27.5 inches) will continue in some parts of central Vietnam until Saturday, the Vietnam Meteorological Agency said.
