It is impossible to guess exactly what is going through Melania’s mind at any given moment. But Twitter certainly tried its Be Best after a particularly bizarre exchange between the first lady and Ivanka Trump at the Republican National Convention.
Captured on camera, the head-scratching interaction came after President Trump’s eldest daughter gave her RNC speech Thursday night. As she left the stage, Ivanka Trump recognized her father and stepmother – whose warm smile immediately turned into a stone-cold stare as soon as the first daughter passed her.
“This was so weird,” tweeted comedian Dana Goldberg, who captured the fleeting moment on video. And behold, a mother was born.
Several viewers interpreted the sudden change in facial expression as a flesh between the two Trump women, and imagined what Ivanka Trump would have said to appeal to her stepmother’s confused look.

Others were simply mesmerized and amazed by the strangeness of everything, unable to even begin to grasp the meaning.
“I can not stop watching,” wrote podcast host Josie Duffy Rice, “Justice in America.”
“What is this?” twittered actress Busy Philipps. “What’s going on? Reset them? It’s really wild.”
And some found that Melania Trump’s disappearing smile was surprisingly relatable, and applied the viral moment to frustrating daily scenarios.
“When I say hello to the head of the studio who killed my thing in development,” wrote filmmaker Jorge Gutierrez.
“I’m at The Cheesecake Factory when the party that came to me is sitting in front of me,” tweeted a popular meme account.
“This is fine with me when I open the door for someone and they say no thanks,” wrote “Game of Thrones” album John Bradley.
