Trump’s falsehoods about police shootings, Biden, coronavirus and China

“We have almost the lowest mortality rate.”

This lacks evidence. Accurate mortality rates for coronavirus are difficult to determine and compare across countries due to differences in population, test rates, and health care systems. But based on existing data, Trump’s claim is inaccurate. Of the 20 countries most affected by the pandemic, the United States has the sixth highest case mortality rate at 4 percent and the second highest death rate per 100,000 people at 41.45, according to Johns Hopkins University.

“Think about this: If we didn’t test, instead of evaluating over 40 million people, if we did half the tests, we would have half the cases. If we made another one, if you cut it in half, you would have half of that again. ”

False. The suggestion that the number of positive cases is directly proportional to the number of tests performed is false. The intensified tests do not explain the recent increase in cases. The spread of the disease does.

In early June, the United States performed between 450,000 and 500,000 tests daily and the number of positive cases daily was around 20,000, for a positive rate of about 4 percent.

This month, daily tests ranged from approximately 600,000 to 800,000. Per Mr. Trump’s logic, that would roughly correlate with daily positive cases of between 24,000 and 32,000. But in reality, the number has hovered around 60,000 cases in the past few days, as the rate of positive tests doubled to around 8 percent.

“These are the real key elements of the Biden-Sanders drive platform.”

This is exaggerated. Trump was referring to the recommendations made by six policy working groups assembled by Biden’s allies and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, his rival in the Democratic primary. Some of his claims, such as saying that Biden wants to achieve carbon neutrality, increase the refugee admission limit, create a path for citizenship for undocumented immigrants and abolish the death penalty, were accurate. But many others were dramatized.

The recommendations include a 100-day moratorium on deportations of people already in the United States, without stopping “all deportations” indefinitely, as Trump said.
