Trump strikes back at Biden after call for national mask mandate: ‘Stop playing politics with the virus’

President Trump accused presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden of “trying” to politicize a pandemic “after his call Thursday for a nationwide mask mandate to curb the spread of coronavirus.

In an evening press release, Trump told Biden to “stop playing politics with the virus.”

Trump claimed that Biden’s approach was “regressive, unscientific and bad for our country.” He accused the former vice president of opposing Trump administration policies that proved effective, such as travel bans, even when he pushed for a masked mandate that does not take into account how the pandemic is affecting specific communities.

“Every once in a while, Biden has been wrong about the virus, ignoring the scientific evidence and putting the left’s policy in front of facts,” Trump said at the briefing. “Sleepy Joe is destroying both China and Europe. He opposed the China travel ban that I imposed very early on and the European ban that I imposed quite early on. ”

Trump’s remarks came hours after Biden appeared alongside Democratic presidency running mate Kamala Harris ahead of a virtual lender in Wilmington, Del. At the event, Biden called for a nationwide mask mandate, urging administrators to request masks in all states for at least the next three months.

Biden quoted rumors that a mask mandate in the three-month period would save at least 40,000 lives. Biden and Harris took no questions about the event.

“Wearing the mask is less about you catching the virus,” Biden said. “It’s about making other people sick.”

Trump accused Biden of pushing for a federal masked mandate that would transcend the bureau’s boundaries and infringe on American rights.

“All Americans must have their freedoms. “I have great confidence in the American people and their leaders,” Trump said. “Joe does not know too much.”
