President Trump promoted a video on Sunday showing protesters in conflict, one of which sings, “White Power.”
“Thanks to the great people at The Villages,” Trump wrote on Twitter as he shared the video. “The radical left does nothing Democrats will fall in the fall. Corrupt Joe is shot. See you soon!!!”
Trump deleted his post later in the morning.
The White House said in a statement that Tump “did not hear the only statement made in the video. What it did see was tremendous enthusiasm from its many supporters.”
The person who posted the video said they were scenes of older people protesting each other in the Villages, Florida retirement community.
At the beginning of the video, a man in a golf cart with pro-Trump signs yells, “White power! White power!”
“F *** Trump! F *** Trump!” an anti-Trump protester soon shouts elsewhere in the clip.
“Nasty language,” responds a woman.
“Nazi racist pig!” the anti-Trump protester yells at another pro-Trump golf cart.
Trump’s Sunday tweet comes as the president has been accused of escalating racial tensions after Minneapolis police killed George Floyd on video and Black Lives Matter protests have ripped through the nation. Last week, Trump tweeted two videos of black men attacking white victims, asking: “Where are the protesters?”
On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar said he had not seen the video, but instead widely denounced white supremacy.
“Obviously, neither the president, his administration, nor I would do anything to support white supremacy or anything that supports discrimination of any kind,” Azar said when asked about Trump’s tweet.
Later, in “State of the Union,” Senator Tim Scott, RS.C., who is black, called Trump’s Twitter post “indefensible.”
“You shouldn’t have retweeted it,” Scott said, “and you should just delete it.”
