Trump says tax cuts do not affect Social Security

President Trump said his plan to permanently order tax cuts through an executive order could “have no impact” on social security benefits.

Speaking to reporters before boarding Marine One, Trump said his double proposal to boost the economy by cutting back amid the coronavirus crisis would in no way affect the long-running federal program.

“This will not affect social security,” Trump said, and the addition of the program would be supplemented by the General Fund. “We protect social security.”

Trump – who said last week that he could order the payroll tax cut to increase employee pay after widespread salary cuts – added the cuts “could be permanent” but did not work out.

Asked about cuts to the U.S. Postal Service – as the country convenes for a presidential election that can rely heavily on postal voting – Trump said the new postmaster general just wants to improve it.

“[The Post office] has lost massive amounts of money, ”Trump said. He added that postmaster general Louis DeJoy is a good man who “wants to make it successful.”

DeJoy, a North Carolina businessman who donated millions to the Trump campaign, eliminated overtime for thousands of workers and made other budget cuts after he took over in June.

On Sunday, Trump also said he had “a very important call this morning with Lebanon” to discuss giving “substantial” aid to the country, after his capital Beirut had a devastating explosion on Tuesday.

“A lot of things were worked out … a lot of countries will help,” he said.
