Trump says Harris would be ‘a good choice’ as Biden’s partner

President Trump is weighing one of the potential top contenders that Democratic challenger Joe Biden is considering as his running mate

As he was leaving the White House for a trip to Texas on Wednesday, the president was asked about Senator Kamala Harris. Trump replied that the California senator “would be a good choice” as a candidate for Biden’s vice presidency.

Harris, a former Democratic presidential candidate who targeted Biden last year in the debate stage, is considered one of the top contenders the alleged Democratic candidate is considering as his running mate.

BIDEN SAYS “FIRST WEEK IN AUGUST” WILL APPOINT BROKER MATE

The former vice president told reporters Tuesday in Delaware that he would choose his running mate for “the first week of August.” Saturday is the first day of the new month.

Biden has said for a couple of months that his running mate announcement will be made in early August, ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which begins on August 17. The former vice president told reporters: “I promise, I will let you know when I do it.”

Speculation that Harris could be Biden’s choice rose on Tuesday, after the notes Biden held in his hand during the press conference had Harris’s name scrawled across the top, as seen in a photo from the AP. The senator’s name was followed by five talking points: “Don’t hold a grudge.” “Campaign with me and Jill”. “Talented.” “Great help for the campaign.” “Great respect for her.”

The content of those notes is not new: Biden has said similar things about Harris in recent months.

BIDEN NOTES SUGGESTS THAT HARRIS MAY BE RUNNING THE MATE CHOICE

But the appearance of the notes came shortly after a Politician report that former Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd, a longtime friend of Biden and co-chair of the campaign’s vice-presidential investigative committee, still had concerns about Harris because of to his takedown of Biden in Connecticut. the first Democratic primary presidential debate in June last year. The report suggested Dodd was concerned that the senator had not expressed regret over the incident, which briefly fueled his campaign when he put Biden on the ropes during the primetime clash.

Dodd’s comments have reportedly come under fire from some Democrats, including those who say Harris is being unfairly subjected to a standard that does not apply to male contenders seeking the White House.

On the stage of the Miami debate 13 months ago, Harris criticized the former vice president’s comments highlighting his ability to find common ground during the 1970s with segregationist senators with whom he disagreed, and decades ago with his opposition to the Federally mandated school transportation.

“Do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose transportation in the United States?” Harris, who is Black, asked Biden during the debate.

“There was a girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and every day they took her by bus to school,” she said. “And that girl was me.”

Biden, who served eight years as vice president of Barack Obama, the first black president in US history, and who enjoyed strong support from African American voters during the primary campaign, angrily said the senator’s comments were “bad description “of your position.

Biden’s poll numbers decreased briefly after the debate, and Harris enjoyed a brief increase in the polls. But his campaign faltered later in the year, and Harris terminated his White House offer last December.

By the time he suspended his campaign, the relationship between Harris and Biden had improved. Biden has publicly praised Harris on numerous occasions, and has repeatedly noted that he has valued her greatly since she became close to her late son, Beau Biden, when they both served as attorney general of their respective states.

Harris ended up backing up Biden and appeared on stage with him, along with another former rival, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, at a rally in Michigan on the eve of that state’s March 10 primary, which the former vice president He ended up winning decisively as he got closer to locking in the Democratic nomination.

“I believe in Joe. I believe in Joe, ”said Harris at the rally. “I know Joe. And that’s why I’m supporting it. “

The rally was Biden’s last before the coronavirus pandemic spread across the country, closing the campaign in person. Since then, Harris has practically campaigned for Biden, spearheading events and fundraisers.

Biden announced in March that he would name a woman as his running mate. In the past two months, amid protests across the country over police brutality against minorities and systemic racism, Biden has faced increased calls to name a black woman as a candidate for the party’s vice presidency.
