Trump says Goya’s boycott was counterproductive: “People are buying like crazy!”

President Trump said Wednesday that the boycott of Goya Foods “failed,” claiming that people are now buying their products “like crazy.”

“@GoyaFoods is doing GREAT. The Radical Left smear machine shot out, people buy like crazy! Trump tweeted.

The president’s tweet comes as Goya Foods, the country’s largest Hispanic-owned food label, faced a backlash after CEO Robert Unanue praised the president during an event at the White House last week.

“We are all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder,” Unanue said at the event.

The President invited Hispanic leaders to the White House and signed an executive order on the White House Hispanic Prosperity Initiative to use more taxpayer support for private and charter schools and “improve Hispanic American access to education and economic opportunities. “

But after Unanue praised the president’s actions, politicians and celebrities pushed for a boycott of the company.

Critics like Rep. Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez, DN.Y., former Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro, and several celebrities targeted the company on social media with hashtags such as #BoycottGoya and #GOYAWAY. Many urged people who use Goya products to start buying similar foods and condiments produced by the company’s competitors.

But this week, supporters are flipping the narrative and calling for a “buy-cott” from Goya Foods.

Many on social media, including conservative media and Republican lawmakers like Senator Marco Rubio, stepped in and urged Americans to buy the company’s products.

“Most of these people in charge of a #GOYABOYCOTT don’t use Goya Foods anyway anyway [a]and most of those who do will give in to #NocheBuena, “Rubio, R-Fla., tweeted over the weekend, with an” I Love Goya “graphic.

And Ivanka Trump, daughter of the President and senior adviser to the White House, posted a photo of her holding a can of Goya black beans on Tuesday night, drawing some criticism.

“If it’s Goya, it has to be good,” he published. She included the Spanish translation, “If it’s Goya, it has to be Good.”

The White House released a statement Wednesday ridiculing the rejection: “Only the media and the culture-canceling movement will criticize Ivanka for showing her personal support for a company that has been unfairly mocked, boycotted, and ridiculed for supporting this administration, one that has consistently fought for and delivered to the Hispanic community. “

Meanwhile, Virginia resident Casey Harper started a GoFundMe on Saturday to buy Goya products to donate to food pantries. The fund has already raised more than $ 250,000.

Goya Foods touted its charitable donations amid calls for its boycott, saying it has given “two million pounds of food to food banks across the country that desperately need food for families affected by COVID19”.

GOYA FOODS CEO WILL NOT APOLOGIZE IN FRONT OF BOYCOTT

Meanwhile, Unanue called the rejection against him when visiting the White House “suppression of speech.”

Unanue said he was previously invited to the White House for an event organized by the Obama administration for Hispanic Heritage Month.

“So, can you speak well or praise a president, but you cannot help in economic and educational prosperity? And you make a positive comment and suddenly it’s not acceptable, “said Unanue.

Unanue said he is not apologizing for his comments in support of Trump’s economic policy and that he will not decline other future invitations.
