Trump was asked about Biden’s attack during a press conference apparently meant to focus on the coronavirus pandemic. The president responded by highlighting the approval of criminal justice reform and the strength of the economy for minorities before the pandemic.
“I have done more for African Americans than anyone, with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln. No one has been around,” Trump said before turning around and leaving the meeting room.
In the past, Trump was similarly compared to the president who signed the Emancipation Proclamation. But he has come under fire for the comparison and frequent accusations of racism for his rhetoric and actions.
Biden, during a town hall meeting with union workers, lashed out at Trump for his use of the term “China virus” to describe the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
“No sitting president has done this,” Biden said of Trump’s rhetoric. “Never, never, never. No Republican president has done this. No Democratic president. We have had racists and they have existed. They have tried to be elected. He is the first who has done it.”
Critics were quick to point out that past presidents have used racist language, supported racist policies and, in some cases, were slaves.
But Trump has faced frequent accusations of racism since before taking office. He insisted on the unfounded conspiracy theory that former President Obama, the country’s first black president, was not born in the United States.
He has referred to African nations as “shit countries,” asserted that Mexico was sending criminals across the border and suggested that four minority congressmen should “return” to their countries despite the fact that three of them were born in the United States.
Trump was asked Wednesday why he blamed Obama for the violence in Chicago in 2016, but has now charged the city’s mayor with a recent spike in violent crime.
“Because President Obama was invited and did a bad job. President Obama could have gone to Chicago,” said Trump. “It could have solved the problem, and it didn’t.”
The president announced earlier Wednesday an increase in the dispatch of federal agents to Chicago to try to quell the recent violence. He attacked Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) during the briefing, saying he is “making a big mistake” by declining federal aid.
Lightfoot told reporters that he believes Trump’s constant criticism of Democratic mayors is a distraction from his “failed leadership on COVID-19.”
