Trump praises Tommy Tuberville after Alabama GOP senators object to election results in January

Trump is pushing senators to reverse the election while Tuberville’s efforts will put his party in an awkward position to vote on whether or not to accept the will of voters.

Last month the G.O.P. Trump’s attempt after the defeat in the presidential election highlights the struggle facing congressional Republicans. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recognized Biden as president-elect in the first week, has privately urged his Republican allies not to join the House of Commons in their planned objection next month.

Stubbing for the Senate split elections in Tuberville, Georgia, which will determine the control of the chamber, he said in a video that one thing came up again this week that senators should also object to the January 6 ratification of election results by Congress.

In the re-enacted video, Tuberville said, “You’ll see what you see. You’ll be reading about it in the House. We’re going to do that in the Senate.”

An acquaintance told CNN’s Caitlin Collins that Tuberville knew what he was doing and was willing to bow down there as if he was thinking of doing this.

Mitch McConnell has just made life difficult for his Republican colleagues

Trump has so far retweeted at least four tweets in support of Tuberville. He also called Tuberville a man of courage, adding that “more Republican senators should follow his lead” before repeating false claims about the election.

Amidst the news, CNN’s Manu Raju is the No. 2 Republican Sen. John Thun asked for his advice for Tuberville. “I hope he doesn’t,” Thune replied. “I think the time has come, as I said, to move on.”

Privately, McConnell on Tuesday called on the G.O.P. Urged senators not to join the House effort in January to object to the result, as doing so would ultimately force senators to vote on the merits of the objection. G.O.P. Leaders fear they will be forced to choose between Trump and the will of voters – and are eager not to put him in office.

Republican Rip. Moe Brooks is a staunch member of the House of Representatives in Alabama, leading the effort to overturn the election results.

“The fight for what I do and what I believe is that we need to improve our electoral system, whether or not others get involved,” Brooks told CNN this week. “The No. 1 goal is to reject the electoral submissions of states that have such a flawed electoral system. They will fix them and not perpetuate or increase the ability of election thieves to engage in voter fraud and election theft in the future.

CNN’s Manu Raju and Caitlan Collins contributed to the report.
