Trump accused of ‘tyrannical display of power’
Donald Trump’s use of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents to quell protests in Portland, and his threat to do the same elsewhere, has been condemned as “tyrannical.”
The president has already deployed DHS agents in Portland, Oregon, with the aim of protecting federal buildings from protesters, drawing intense criticism from local leaders who say the federal presence has only exacerbated tensions rather than promoting public security.

“This is precisely the type of tyrannical display of power that specifically concerned the Founding Fathers,” said Jeffrey A Engel, director of the presidential history center at Southern Methodist University.
Dr. Engel’s comments came when a report claimed that a leaked note showed that federal investigators were gathering information on protest movements in US cities where efforts to topple statues have prevailed.
The memorandum also established legal guidance for the “expanded intelligence activities necessary to mitigate the significant threat to homeland security” that protesters represent.
