President Donald Trump increased Facebook ad spending for his re-election campaign after falling behind alleged Democratic nominee Joe Biden in numerous nationwide polls.
Spending on advertising for the Trump campaign on Facebook reached more than $ 2.2 million between June 21 and 27, according to the Facebook Ad Library. That’s a huge step up from the $ 1.26 million spent between June 14-20, and the $ 1.48 million spent the week before.
In comparison, Biden’s campaign spent just over $ 1.5 million from June 21-27.
Trump’s increased spending comes as multiple polls across the country show Biden has taken an advantage over the incumbent president, according to RealClearPolitics.
For the month of June, Trump spent nearly $ 6.6 million on Facebook ads, behind Biden’s total spending in June of $ 11 million, according to the Facebook Ads Library. Earlier this month, Biden had increased his spending after Trump was criticized for his response to numerous Black Lives Matter protests across the country.
Trump’s recent splurge of advertising comes as Facebook deals with an exodus of elite brands. These advertisers are withdrawing their advertising budgets for July or more in boycott of the numerous policies of the social network that allow hate speech and disinformation in the service. The exodus includes Verizon, Coca-Cola, and Starbucks, among others.
