It’s rare that the East Room is used for funerals, outside of a ceremony for a deceased president, CNN noted.

The last time a deceased body was brought to the White House was for the funeral services of former President Kennedy after his assassination in 1963.

The room is where the body of President Abraham Lincoln was laid to rest in 1865 and where the funeral of Lincoln’s 11-year-old son Willie was held three years in advance.

The first presidents to have funeral services in the East House were William Harrison in 1841, and Zachary Taylor in 1850.

However, the East House has also been used by former presidents to host funerals for others.

President Benjamin Harrison used the East Room in 1890 for funeral services for the wife and daughter of his Secretary of the Navy, Benjamin Tracy, after they were killed in a fire.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt held a state funeral in the East House in 1936 for his longtime political adviser and close friend Louis Howe.

Trump on Monday had said he thought holding a White House service for his late brother.

“That would, I think, be a great honor for him. I think he would be honored a lot,” the president told reporters. “He was so proud of what we did and what we do for our country. That I think it would be appropriate.”

Robert Trump died Saturday at the age of 71. The president had visited his brother a day earlier at a hospital in New York City.

Born in 1948, Robert Trump previously served as executive vice president of the Trump Organization.

He was recently in the news for leading a lawsuit on behalf of the Trump family who tried to stop the publication of a book by his and cousin of President Trump, Mary Trump, who was sharply critical of the president and the Trump family as a whole.

In announced the death of Robert Trump last week the president said, “He was not only my brother, he was my best friend.”

“He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace,” Trump said.
