Over the past week, the NYPD says 69 people have been victims of gun violence, including 43 people who were shot on Friday and Saturday, according to NBC News.
Shooting incidents in the city have nearly tripled in the last four weeks, compared to the same period of time last year. The statistics follow a pattern seen since June when shootings increased by 130 percent as the lockon of the coronavirus began to decrease.
In the month of July, there were 244 shooting incidents in the city, compared to 88 shooting incidents in July 2019, a + 177% increase.
For the full year, to the end of July, there was a spike of 72% in urban shooting incidents with 772 incidents compared to 450 to the same point in 2019.
Murders are also up 30 percent this summer compared to last year.
There were 235 murders in the city for the first seven months of 2020 compared to 181 for the first seven months of 2019.
In July alone, there were 54 murders, compared to 34 murders last year.

Trump’s promise comes as crime in the city continues to rise, residents flee – leaving their apartments in greater numbers than ever before – and homeless people remain scattered across the streets.
It is not the first time Trump has called a Democratic mayor over an escalation of violence and unrest over protests stemming from the death of George Floyd in police speech.
He is usually met with opposition from these mayors who indicate that federal troops would only increase tensions in such cities, but the president is trying to position himself as the country’s choice of law and order.

While murders and shootings have increased, reports of other major crimes have fallen in recent months, the New York Times reports.
The shooting of the weekend began on Friday night when a man was seen innocently shooting at an audience at an outdoor party at 112th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem. Two women and a man were hit, but all three were expected to survive.
Monday Saturday morning at 1 a.m. on West 128th Street in Harlem. A 30-year-old man died from a gunshot wound to the torso.
Next, in Queens, a 28-year-old off-duty correctional officer was shot in the head and died.
John Jeff, 28, was walking down the street in Jamaica, Queens around 3 a.m. when he was hit in the head and chest.
The suspect then grabbed Jeff’s department-issued gun from his holster and used it to shoot him several times before stepping up with the gun.
At 10 a.m., an unidentified man shot a 40-year-old man in Grand Central Station after a quarrel, according to police.
Police released surveillance footage of the suspect, who fled the scene on foot westbound in East 42nd Street.

Authorities say John Jeff, 28, was walking around Ridgedale Street near DeFoe Street in Jamaica when he was hit in the head and chest.
The victim suffered an injury to his left arm and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
In Brooklyn, a 28-year-old man was shot in the face just after 4pm on Saturday.
Later, in the Prospect Lefferts area of Brooklyn, a 47-year-old man was left with two gunshot wounds to the head. He died shortly thereafter.
Paul Pinkney, paid his respects to his murdered neighbor Deshawn Reid when he jumped in the head twice on the edge of the park for about 2 hours. He was sitting on a bench when he was shot, according to the New York Daily News.
By Saturday night, police in the Bronx were shooting a 27-year-old man who was hit in the torso. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital where he died.

Offline Correctional Officer John Jeff, 28, was walking down Ridgedale Street near DeFoe Street in Jamaica, Queens at about 3am when he was hit in the head and chest.
Also in the neighborhood, a further two separate shootings saw three more being sent to the hospital.
A 19-year-old man was shot in the neck at 4.30pm in Morrisania. He was transported to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition.
Another injured victim in the Bronx eventually came to the hospital with an injury to her right leg.
At 4:30 a.m., a second shooting occurred in the Pelham Bay area of the Bronx when a 26-year-old man was also shot in the back on Westchester Avenue.
Also in the early hours of Sunday morning, officers attended a fourth fatal shooting at Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
A 47-year-old man died after being hit twice in the head at two o’clock.
