Republicans are blocking Michigan’s largest county from certifying the results of Tuesday’s Nov. 3 election, leaving a glaring space for a worrying development that lost nearly 146,000 votes to Donald Trump in the state.
A four-member board of canvassers in Wayne County, including Detroit, is surrounded by partisan lines Tuesday to certify election results. J B Biden carries the county by about 323,000 votes. According to the Washington Post, the decision essentially certifies Michigan State Board canvassers. According to Bridge Michigan, the board is divided by biased lines and must approve election results by at least a 3-1 vote.
There are some concerns that if the board does not take action to certify the results, Michigan could enter the state legislature and appoint its own voters. Michigan Republican leaders in the state legislature have eased these concerns.
A Republican member of the board of canvassers said Tuesday he would be willing to certify the results in some parts of the county other than Detroit, which many see as clearly biased and racist measures. Detroit is more than 78% black.
Trump has focused on the vote count in Detroit in several lawsuits filed in the state to block the certification of results in the campaign. Some judges have dismissed lawsuits without finding any irregularities.
