President Donald Trump rails against reports that Power 5 college football conferences will cancel their season, by defending several top athletes pleading for the season to continue.
After the Big Ten – that is the home of Ohio State and Michigan football crowds – canceled their season Monday morning, Trump tweeted, “Play College Football!”

Trump supported Clemson quarterback and potential 2021 NFL No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence, who posted a graphics that required all five conferences to play this fall.
“The student-athletes have worked too hard to cancel their season,” Trump tweeted with the hashtag #WeWantToPlay.

Lawrence’s attitude about continuing the season is not universal among college footballers. Last week, a group of Pac-12 players threatened to sit out as their season went on. And other teams – like Syracuse Football – have been practicing to get to grips with concerns about coronavirus. The ACC, SEC, Big 12, and Pac-12 have yet to make a decision following the announcement of the Big Ten.
On Monday, President of the White House Kayleigh McEnany defended the tweet from Trump that this fall supported the return of college football.
“He would very much like to see college football continue safely with their sport,” McEnany said of Trump. ‘As he mentioned in that tweet, a lot of college athletes work their whole lives to get four years, sometimes they get an extra year red shirt when they are lucky. They are working their whole lives for this moment and you would like to see them have a chance to live out their dreams. ”
