“Black Lives leader Matter declares: ‘If the United States does not give us what we want, we will burn this system down and replace it,'” Trump tweeted Thursday. “This is treason, seduction, insurrection!”
The president’s comments appear to respond to comments from Hawk Newsome, leader of Black Lives Matter Greater New York, in an interview on Fox News Wednesday about the movement’s goals after the murder of George Floyd in police custody.
“If this country does not give us what we want, we will burn this system down and replace it. I can speak figuratively, I can speak literally, it’s a matter of interpretation, ”Newsome said during an interview with Fox News presenter Martha MacCallum.
“Let’s be very real,” Newsome continued. “Let’s look at the history of the 1960s, when blacks got into a fuss. We had the greatest growth in wealth, in property. Think back to the last few weeks since we started protesting. There have been eight police officers fired across the country. “
Black Lives leader Matter went on to say he neither approves nor condemns the riots, but argued that the protests have led to change.
Trump, who was aboard Air Force One while tweeting, also lashed out at De Blasio’s plan to install a Black Lives Matter mural outside of Trump Tower, a move police have viewed negatively.
Similar murals have been installed in other cities, including Washington, DC, near the White House.
“I was told that @NYCMayor Bill de Blasio wants to paint the legendary and beautiful Fifth Avenue, right in front of Trump Tower / Tiffany, with a big yellow Black Lives Matter sign. ‘Pigs in a blanket, frying’ Em Like Bacon ‘, referring to killing the police, is his song. The NYPD is furious! Trump tweeted.
The president was referring to a song used by protesters at a Black Lives Matter rally in Minnesota five years ago that at the time sparked a violent backlash from the police.
Trump has come under fire for his response to protests nationwide after Floyd’s death on May 25, particularly for his rhetoric that encourages aggressive crackdown on protests, some of which have turned violent.
Trump released what was described as a modest executive order on police training reform last week and has emphasized his support for law enforcement. The president also criticized activists’ demands, including the Black Lives Matter movement, that police departments see their funds being reduced and reallocated to social programs, commonly known as “disbursing the police.”
Trump has not commented extensively on Black Lives Matter, but said in an interview with Spectrum News this week that the move “means a lot to me.”
“No one has done more for African Americans than I have,” Trump said, pointing to his work on criminal justice reform, opportunity zones, and funding for historically black colleges and universities.
