The Trump administration intends to flood regulators with a new definition for shower heads, allowing the president and other citizens to return to the good old days of high-pressure showers.
De Department of Energy can release a decades-old regulation limiting the amount of water that can flow through showers, according to a Wednesday proposal. The 1992 regulation limited the water flow to 2.5 gallons per minute. That regulation was strengthened under the Obama administration, which closed for a while allowing manufacturers to add multiple taps to the shower to increase pressure.
The Trump administration is considering enacting the Obama administration’s policy to allow 2.5 gallons per minute per tap. Andrew deLaski, executive director of the energy conservation group Appliance Standards Awareness Project, told United Press that the proposed change could flow much more water.
“You could have 10, 15 gallons per minute out of the shower head – literally probably washing you out of the bathroom,” deLaski said.
DeLaski said the policy change was unnecessary and that it should not be a top priority for the administration. He also said it could be devastating in parts of the country that are suffering from droughts, such as California. He noted that data from the Department of Energy revealed that most consumers buy a shower head that produces 2 gallons per minute, which is only 80% of the legal capacity.

President Trump has made clear his aversion to low water pressure in recent months. He said in July that he wanted to return to the days of a “perfect” shower.
