UFC middleweight Kelvin Gastelum landed on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island in search of a victory. First YOU F The winner came from consecutive losses to Darren Till and Israel Adesanya. However, against Jack Hermansson, he would only last 78 seconds and extend that losing streak to three fights.
In UFC Fight Island 2: Figueiredo vs. Benavidez 2, Gastelum ended up on the wrong end of a featured reel end after his Swedish opponent hooked an early heel hook.
The loss was just Gastelum’s second career stop loss (after a loss in the arm triangle to Chris Weidman in 2017). After this latest loss, Gastelum turned to Instagram to offer an apology for those he feels disappointed.
“Really embarrassed boys,” wrote Gastelum. Sorry. My team my family [UFC], [Dana White], [Mick Maynard]. I am much better than what was shown tonight. Thanks to all my family, my team and my friends for the continued support. I love you all.”
“You can find many defeats, but you shouldn’t be defeated,” Gastelum continued. “In fact, it may be necessary to face defeats, so [you] can know who [you] are that [you] can arise from, how [you] can still get out of that. “
This weekend’s loss lowered Gastelum’s record to 15-6 (1). His six losses have occurred in the past five years, the first of which was a weight fight against Tyron Woodley at UFC 183 in January 2015.
Since that Woodley loss, Gastelum has had victories over Nate Marquardt, Johny Hendricks, Tim Kennedy, Michael Bisping and Jacare Souza.
Gastelum currently ranks seventh in the UFC middleweight rankings, one place behind Hermansson.
