Deadline is quick to clarify that although Tron 3 is currently in development at Disney, it has not yet been given an official greenlight by the studio, so there is no guarantee that the new movie will actually see the light of day. . Still, ten years after the release of Tron: Legacy, a sequel looks more and more likely.

Word of a Leto-driven Tron film first appeared in 2017, with The Hollywood Reporter indicating that the film would be a franchise remake as a direct sequel to Legacy. Leto is presumably playing a new character named Ares, one who is said to have been an important part of the abandoned Tron 3 script. That may imply that the reboot is still part of the same universe as the previous two films, but it’s unclear if characters like Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn or Olivia Wilde’s Quorra will return.

Unfortunately, Tron himself is unlikely to appear, as Bruce Boxleitner confirmed he is “ready” with the franchise. That said, Boxleitner had previously reunited with his original Tron costume earlier in 2020 for Disney + series Prop Culture.Tron: Legacy co-producer Justin Springer is on board to produce the new film. In case the film goes ahead, Leto and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also help produce in some capacity.
