With Kamala Harris taking the stage to deliver her bag on Wednesday, accepting the Vice Presidential nomination, The Daily ShowTrevor Noah has decided to delve into one big smear she’s had to deal with Fox News and other conservative pundits since she was announced a week ago: With a mother from India and a father from Jamaica, she just is not “black enough. ”
After playing a montage of commentators like Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh and Dinesh D’Souza that leveled certain attacks against the California senator, Noah said, “You can dissect the legacy of Kamala Harris anything you want. But to say she is not black? ”
“Is she black enough to walk out of a restaurant in Jim Crow South during the day?” he asked. ‘Would she have been black enough to be repaid? Was she black enough to be kept as a little girl from a school with whites? Then she’s black! ”
The host then offered a simple test: ‘You know how you know you’re black? When you meet a white person and before you meet their parents for the first time, they start a sentence with: ‘Hey, listen, so before we go inside …’ – you are Black! ‘
What is “particularly ironic” about conservative media “trying to exclude Harris from Blackness,” he continued, is that “it is the opposite of what white America has been doing for centuries” by defining as many people as Black, whether they want to or not. not. ” After a lengthy statement of the so-called “one-drop rule”, Noah said, “So yes, it’s disgusting that these people are now trying to exclude Kamala Harris from being black.”
But he also called it a ‘rite of passage on the road to greatness’, exposing how the other great DNC speaker faced exactly the same thing on Wednesday night during his 2008 presidential campaign.
“Your blackness as a person is never questioned,” Noah explained. “But in success it is put under the microscope.” If a black person commits a crime, he said you should never hear Fox News, “Stop it, this may not be black-on-black crime. Maybe it’s half Indian-on-Black crime.”
“But as soon as blackness is considered for excellence and perfection, what is often considered the domain of knowledge, is that when white people begin to doubt someone’s black references,” he added.
Everyone wanted to question Obama’s Blackness when he ran. “But once Obama came into the White House and conservatives did not like his policies, he magically transformed into that Blackass homeboy who was destroying the country,” Noah said. ‘I think so, that’s the silver lining for you, Kamala. Fox News might be asking for your blackness now. But believe it or not, the second time you step into that White House with Joe Biden and you make some decisions they do not like, trust me, you will be black if it can be. ”
