Agent fee agent Left Tackle Trent Williams is expected to test the market instead of re-signing with 49 people before the NFL’s legal negotiation window opens on March 15. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t aim to return to San Francisco though, and he insisted Richard Sherman in the Crich Collinsworth podcast showed that he was leaning towards living in two areas.
He did not explicitly announce his return, but his response to what Sherman predicted for Williams’ impending free agency would have left some hoping the left-hander would return to San Francisco.
“I’ve got San Francisco,” Sherman said. “I’ve got them staying in San Francisco for people of faith. I think he lives in San Francisco. I think he makes you happy for people for another 6-6 years and gets his gold jacket, and then he decides whether he wants it in Washington or San Francisco. “
Williams’ response after hosts George Chahouri and Sherman, Williams predicted his return to the 49ers:
“It’s not bad to take, spread. It’s not bad to take. You’re all barking at the right tree.”
The 49ers acquired Williams from Washington last year for the 2020 draft pick and for the third round pick in the 2021 draft. He seemed to suggest after a season that he would like to be with 49 Caesars, but also said he was exploring the market to find out what his value might be in the last big pay day of his 32-year career.
Williams would find it clear that no declarative statements should be made in any way with free agent negotiations surrounding any announcement, and the comment on the podcast is far from a binding commitment. The answer was good news for the 49ers for that time. They will have to wait until March 15 after the unofficial free agency starts to get the right answer about Williams’ fate.
