Training camp Day 8 observations

Center of attention: The Lions did a good job in the first week of camp by cross-training their internal offensive linemen. We saw Frank Ragnow, Logan Stenberg, Jonah Jackson and Kenny Wiggins all play center on points in camp.

The Lions found what they saw of Beau Benzschawel at the end of last year’s playing center. Benzschawel missed the first week of practice due to injury, but he is back the last few days. It has been good to see him back as Ragnow’s understudy with the breach of the second team. It is allowed Stenberg, who took many of the central reps of the second team, to return to play his more natural waiting position.

Never noticed: Long snappers are usually only noticed when something goes wrong. These moments have not been much about Don Muhlbach’s 16-year career and that’s why he’s done it at such a high level for so long. The Lions were working on their point Thursday, and I noticed that Muhl had one low snap that Jack Fox had to grab his feet and bounce another Muhl to Fox. It’s something we rarely see, and that’s why it caught my eye.
