Everyone has a hobby. Martin McCaulay’s has been squatting on trademarks for the possible upcoming name of the Washington NFL franchise.

He has given many interviews in the past few days, and has been active on his Twitter page, sharing various thoughts and predictions about the team’s rapid process to change its name.

More recently, McCaulay has made clear the reasons for his decision to claim the rights to so many potential names: “I want them to change the name and I’m embarrassed if I do something to slow it down.” I thought if I hoarded all the good names that would prevent someone else who might have neck problems from catching them. “

McCaulay has repeatedly said he is willing to give the team trademarks for free, but that he contacted the team more than a week ago and has not received a response.

“I wish they would tell me what I need to do to get out of their way to change the name if I am an obstacle,” McCaulay said.

McCaulay also believes that there are currently four viable options for a new name, if a new name is adopted before the start of the 2020 season: Redtails, Renegades, Redhawks, and Americans. He owns full trademark rights to all four names.

The popular Red Wolves option will be more difficult to implement quickly. Arkansas State University owns those rights and is currently fighting in court against a Tennessee soccer team that uses the same name.

Whatever the new name is, it will be critical for Washington to own all relevant brand rights. Otherwise, you will not be able to sell merchandise bearing the name, and whoever owns the rights will.
