Opa! Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are officially Greek citizens.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the exciting news on Instagram on Sunday (July 26). @ritawilson @tomhanks are now proud Greek citizens, “Mitsotakis wrote alongside a photo with his wife Mareva Grabowski and the Hollywood couple showing off their new passports.

Wilson, although born in the United States, is of Greek descent and was raised in the Greek Orthodox faith. Her mother is Greek and she grew up in Sotirë near Dropull i Sipërm in Albania, near the Greek border. Wilson was also instrumental in helping playwright and actress Nia Vardalos secure a contract for the movie Smash, My great Greek wedding.

Hanks, although not of Greek descent, often turned to social media to celebrate Mediterranean culture, and even spent his birthday in the country earlier this month. In January, Hanks called the new year tweeting: “Starting 2020 as an honorary citizen of all Greece! Kronia pola! (More or less, ‘Happy New Year!’). Hanx”
