TikTok is gone, but the Chinese ByteDance Resso app thrives in India – Quartz India


When India banned 59 Chinese apps in late June, one dodged the bullet: Resso

Owned by TikTok parent firm ByteDance, the music streaming social app Resso launched in India in March this year after several months of testing.

Between January and June, its facilities have skyrocketed, reaching 3 million last month, data from the market intelligence platform SensorTower shows.

Narendra Modi’s government’s June 29 ban on Chinese apps included not only Bytedance’s popular TikTok, but also two of its other platforms, Vigo Video and Helo. The Beijing-based company lost more than 200 million users just because of TikTok in India.

However, the firm is still signing agreements for office spaces with WeWork. Enthusiasm may come from Resso’s success.

After all, the Indians, who have been avoiding everything Chinese After the border tension between the two countries, they have been applying the Resso app without batting an eye. Overall, the app has reached over 10.6 million installations for the first time worldwide on the App Store and Google Play. About 74% of these downloads come from India.

However, the app’s success is still at stake due to the crowded music streaming market in India, which is currently governed by YouTube Music, JioSaavn and Gaana.
