The Tigers announced a series of roster moves on Wednesday, formally selecting the right-hander’s contract Casey Mize (as previously announced) and also select the outside field contract Jorge Bonifacio. They will both be on the roster of the big league. Right Dario Agrazal and first baseman CJ Cron were also transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 45-day injured list to open up space on the 40-man roster. Meanwhile, handyman Harold Castro is redirected to the 10-day injured list due to a tight left hamstring.
Mize, the 2018 general draft pick, will make his MLB debut against another debuted first-round pick: White Sox referee Dane Dunning. Mize is considered one of the game’s main prospects and a potentially fundamental piece of a rebuilding Tigers squad – one that the club hopes to at least place its rotation through the 2026 season. He dominated opponents at Class-A Advanced and Double-A in 2019, and worked on a combined 2.55 ERA with a great 106-to-23 K / BB ratio in 109 1/3 frames.
Bonifacio is no stranger to the AL Central, having spent several years with the Royals as a right-back and designated hitter. He is a career .247 / .319 / .408 hitter in 713 Major League Record appearances and is looking for a rebound chance after a PED suspension ended his term more or less in Kansas City. Bonifacio recorded 21 appearances from the records after being re-introduced from that suspension, but he has since moved on to the depth chart and was finally released in late November.
The injury to 26-year-old Castro escapes the Tigers from some versatility off the bench. He had already appeared on shortstop, second base, third base and all three positions on the field by 2020 – all while placing a respectable .276 / .364 / .379 through 33 record appearances.
