DETROIT – First aid pitcher Alex Wilson will not be part of the Detroit Tigers bullpen in 2020, nor will he be in the Toledo-based taxi squad.
The Tigers announced Thursday that Wilson had received his unconditional release. It is the first in what could be a series of moves in the next 48 hours as the Tigers settle into the group of 60 players they will begin practicing with on July 1 at Comerica Park.
Wilson, 33, was one of the Tigers’ most trusted relievers of 2015-18, posting a 3.20 ERA in 264 innings. He bounced off a couple of organizations in 2019 and returned to the Tigers in a minor league deal this spring. I was experimenting with a new side arm delivery when the spring season closed.
Wilson was one of 54 players at camp on March 12 when the season was suspended, although today’s move makes it clear that not everyone will be invited back.
The Tigers will look for a mix of young and veteran players to complete their active roster and taxi squad for an unusual 60-game season in 2020.
