Tigers launch 60-man player pool packed with prospects


DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers will have a mix of veteran taxpayers and top prospects in the pool of players they can choose from during the 2020 season.

The Tigers announced the names of 58 players in their 60-player group on Sunday.

The group includes catcher Dillon Dingler, a second-round draft pick earlier this month, and outfielder Riley Greene, the club’s best pick in 2019.

The Tigers are also expected to add third baseman Spencer Torkelson, the No. 1 overall pick in 2020, when he formally signs his contract later this week.

Pitchers and catchers will report for spring training restarted on Wednesday. The rest of the club will join them on Friday.

In addition to Torkelson, Dingler and Greene, launch prospects Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Alex Faedo and Tarik Skubal are also in the player pool.

Unlike some teams that move younger players to a satellite location, the Tigers will do all of their training at Comerica Park.

When the season begins, the Tigers will maintain an active roster of 30 men and send the remaining players to Toledo, where they will stay in shape and await a possible call to the big leagues.

The only player on the 40-man roster not in the player pool is outfielder Troy Stokes Jr., which could indicate he was stepped down to make room for Michael Fulmer, who is returning from the 60-day disabled list. . The Tigers did not immediately announce that transaction.

Other players who participated in spring training but are not listed in the player pool include: right-handed pitcher Sandy Báez; Kade Scivicque receiver; the utility Daniel Pinero; and gardeners José Azocar, Danny Woodrow and Jacob Robson.
