Tigers activate Buck Farmer, cut Carson Fulmer

The Detroit Tigers activated referee Buck Farmer from the 10-day injured list for Thursday night’s final in Chicago.

Farmer left a left body in Pittsburgh on Aug. 9 while breaking to first base on a baseball, but the injury was not considered serious and he spent the minimum time at the IL.

To make room for Farmer, Tigers referee assistant Carson Fulmer appointed for assignment. Fulmer is out of options, which means he can not be transferred to the minor leagues without first removing exemptions.

Farmer, 29, had a 2.84 ERA in 6 1/3 innings of work before his injury, and worked primarily as the eighth submitter to close Joe Jimenez.

The Tigers’ 10-man bullpen now looks like this: Jimenez, Farmer, Gregory Soto, Jose Cisnero, John Schreiber, Bryan Garcia, Daniel Norris, Tyler Alexander, Kyle Funkhouser and Rony Garcia.

Fulmer, 26, was charged with exemption from the Chicago White Sox on July 25. The Vanderbilt University stand was set eighth in 2015 by the Chicago White Sox and was once one of the mainstays of baseball. But he has struggled to control much of his career in the big and small leagues.

Fulmer posted a 6.75 ERA in 6 2/3 innings of work with the Tigers, knocking out seven and running three. If he clears exemptions, the Tigers can keep him in the organization by sending him directly to the alternative training ground in Toledo.
