Three-star cornerback Caleb Johnson commits to Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners have been added to their 2021 draft class. Caleb Johnson, a Greenville, Texas cornerback, has announced his commitment to Crimson and Cream. He is now the twelfth commitment of the cycle and the eighth defensive player to commit. The news was released by the Herald Banner, a local newspaper in Greenville, Texas. Earlier this afternoon, our Brandon Drumm spoke to Johnson about it.

“Yes, it was disappointing that the news came early,” Johnson said. “I’ve been responding to people all day, but I’m excited to be a Soon. This is a great day for me.”

According to the Industry-generated 247Sports Composite Player Ranking, Johnson is viewed as the No. 519 Recruit in the 2021 class. He is also ranked No. 85 cornerback in the nation and No. 75 player in the state of Texas. . Looking at the specific rankings of the 247Sports Network, our panel of national experts gives Johnson a boost. There, he registered as a top 30 cornerback in the nation (No. 29) and prospect No. 55 in Lone Star State.

Johnson is a two-sport athlete, showing his skills on the soccer field and in athletics. He has participated in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump and triple jump. At the beginning of this spring, recorded a PR of 10.58 seconds in the 100 meters. He has also recorded a 23-second run in the 200 meters. Before that, in the fall of 2019, Johnson was named Tformer District 8-5A-II second team pick at catcher as junior. During that season, he reportedly recorded 372 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 26 receptions. He also added 43 rushing yards on seven attempts.

Johnson, drafted as a corner by the Sooners, is the third defensive running back of the class. He joins Jordan Mukes, a security, and recently compromised Latrell McCutchin like the other cornerback in the group. With Alex Grinch and Roy Manning Continuing to search for speed, Johnson brings exactly what the coaches are looking for.

Gabe Brooks, the 247Sports Network’s Midlands Region recruiting analyst, provided his assessment of Johnson’s player:

“Two-way perspective like a slot machine and a cornerback with the size expected for those points. Medium height and slim build that can hold a little more mass. Possesses elite speed in a track configuration. Personal record 10.58 in the 100m. It translates to gridding at starting burst and rushing speed. Predominantly a catcher through junior year of high school. Possessing great playability in vertical passes and career scenarios after capture. Ball skills and intriguing athletics as prospect cornerback. You will face obvious learning curve if you move to a new defensive position full time. You must develop a technical acumen in coverage. You have functional athleticism and verified speed to make that transition. Projects to level Power Five at every side of the ball with explosiveness to become an impact player. “
