Three police officers who were shot while responding to an invasion of a home in Maryland were violently arrested, the boss said yesterday.

Officers responded to a reported home invasion at 6:30 p.m., at an address in Hyattsville, a town about 32 miles southwest of Baltimore, police said.

“Within seconds of arriving, they were under fire,” said Prince George’s County Interim Police Chief Hector Velez. “They were hungry.”

Two of the three officers who were shot were ‘rescued’ by their captives, Velez said.

One officer was beaten in the chest and had injuries to an arm and a leg. Another officer was shot in the back. The third officer was wounded in the foot.

The officers returned with guns, and two men were detained. The men were not injured, police said.

Mr. Velez also said the officers provided their ‘self-care’ after they were shot, allowing them to be transported to a hospital for further treatment.

“They will be fine,” Valez said. ‘They’re in good spirits, they’re worried about each other.’

The boss added: ‘This is the call you hope you never get, and we were so shocked yesterday to have received the call that three of our officers were shot.

“All three of these officers are nothing short of heroes.”

Governor Larry Hogan tweeted: ‘We extend our prayers to the three officers who were shot dead in Prince George’s County last night. @MDSP has offered its full support for the research. ‘
