First shot: iOS 14 and all its new features

1. Tag someone in a text conversation

Updates coming to the Messages app announced by Apple are primarily focused on iMessage group conversations.

Than: You can now tag someone in a conversation when you want to get their attention (useful for large groups) and reply directly to a message, creating a thread within your conversation. That will help get your attention and ensure that you receive a timely response.

How: Tagging someone in a convo group should be as simple as typing the @ symbol followed by their name in chat. An online reply is made by long-pressing a message and selecting Reply.

2. Post a conversation at the top of the messages

Than: Pinning a conversation at the top of the Messages app means you don’t have to scroll through the long list of contacts and group conversations to find your favorite contacts. This is especially useful if you have a group to go to, such as a family chat or a friend chat that you talk to every day, or if you are planning a longer-term event like a group observation party.

How: You can pin a contact or conversation at the top of your conversation list by sliding your finger to the right on any thread.

3. Apple now has a built-in translation app

Than: Instead of having to use the Google Translate app on your iPhone, iOS 14 has a built-in translation app that will allow you to convert text and even have conversations with someone who only speaks a different language. You can translate English, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Portuguese, and Russian.

How: You will have two options once you open the application. You can type the word or phrase you want to translate, or touch the microphone icon at the bottom of the screen to use voice to text. Once you’re done, the app will translate it into your language of choice. This is especially useful if you are asking someone a quick question or you also want to hear the pronunciation.

To keep an ongoing conversation going, you will put the phone in landscape mode and tap the same microphone icon; you don’t need to hold down. You should be able to close the app by swiping up when you’re done using it. We also notice buttons to pause and play.

4. A more organized home screen with the App Library

Have you ever wished for that your iPhone had an app drawer like Android? Well, soon it will. It’s called the App Library.

Than: App Library is a new screen that is located just to the right of your last home screen. Automatically organize all applications on your phone into folders. The purpose of this feature is to make it easy for you to search for all applications installed on your iPhone. It goes hand in hand with another new home screen feature that allows you to hide app pages that you use infrequently.

How: You will use the Application Library when you want to open an application that does not appear on your home screens. To get to it, swipe left (to go right) past the final home screen. You can use it in three ways. First, you can take a look at the automatically organized folders to find the icon you want: Health and Fitness or Social, for example. At the top of the App Library screen, you’ll find two folders: Suggestions and Recently Added. Both will automatically update and adjust which apps are in any of the folders based on how often you use an app and what you have recently installed. You can also search for your application by name in the search field at the top of the screen, or touch to see an alphabetical list of your applications.

Here’s more on how Hide home screen pages for easy access to the App Library.

5. Widgets have a new look and a new home

You no longer have to be jealous of your Android friends – iPhone can now have widgets on the home screen. So is.

Than: Instead of limiting widgets to Today view on the left side of the home screen, you can now add widgets directly to your screen, with multiple sizes as an option. There’s even a Smart Stack widget that will show you information from multiple apps when you think you need it. For example, it can show you the weather widget followed by your calendar widget when you get up in the morning.

How: You can view your widgets in Today view as you always have on the left side of your main home screen, or you can drag and drop a widget from Today view to your home screen. Alternatively, when you edit your app layout, you can tap the + ‌ Sign in to the upper left corner of the screen, open the widget gallery, and see what widgets you can add to your device.

Widgets can be pinned to your home screen and resized to your liking.

6. Picture-in-picture is a practical tool that you will love

The iPad ($ 255 on the post market) has had the ability to play a video in picture-in-picture mode for some years, and finally reaches the iPhone.

Than: Picture in Picture creates a thumbnail image of a video that continues to play even when you are on another application or screen. It will appear when you want to change gears to use a different part of the phone, but you don’t want to stop the video.

How: Every time you watch a video in a compatible app, like Twitch, and swipe to return to the home screen, the video will continue to play, only in a smaller window. You can drag PiP around the screen, adjust its size by pinching and zooming, and even temporarily hide from the edge of the screen. When you’re done, just touch the X to close the video Oh, and let’s not forget: Picture in Picture, as it is called, also works with FaceTime video calls and these other applications in addition. Huzzah!

There is much more Apple announced during WWDC, and we have a summary of everything. You can install iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 right now, as long as you are a developer.
