The Chicago Bears go into padded practice one week, and there is still no definitive starter pulled away between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles. Although it certainly helps that Saturday started the first of hopefully several investigations that the team will host.
If there are no preseason games to assess these quarterbacks, Bears coaching staff should be creative in their evaluation. Saturday’s practice was mostly 11-on-11 action, which kicked the quarterback league a notch. It also gave head coach Matt Nagy a good look at his quarterbacks in the closest thing he will see in terms of live-game action prior to the Opener of Week 1 as a starter will already be declared.
“We were able to get a lot of reps,” Nagy told reporters. ‘I think it’s a transition time for only the mindset of the players to go from the sideline back to the field for a four-game drive, back to the sideline, back to the field for a nine-run ride. It simulates some game situations. It’s not perfect. But it just changes it a little bit. ”
Unlike previous practices this week, it was not after every play. Both Trubisky and Foles had their own offensive series to serve, which helps simulate a more game-like atmosphere during a quarterback competition with preseason games.
Here’s how the quarterbacks ran while watching Saturday, through the eyes of Chicago’s beats writers.
