The county reported 145 new deaths Wednesday, the most in a single day since the onset of the coronavirus epidemic.
The county also reported 16,525 new coronavirus cases, the highest number since one day earlier this month, including a backlog of older cases.
Dr. Christina Ghali, director of the County Department of Health Services, warned that hospitals are having a hard time dealing with the increase in patients, affecting their ability to treat as well as dealing with non-coronavirus emergencies and surgeries.
He said the case would continue to grow after the holidays. Nov. Between January 1 and 31, the department projected about 8,700 deaths from COVID-19.
“We have never seen such a high daily mortality rate during an epidemic, and Model Dell predicts that the worst is yet to come,” said G. Lee.
“Those cases are high and how much our hospitals and healthcare workers are affected – and how many people die because of covid, because all the air has been expelled from their lungs by covid and machines can’t move it -” he said. It’s up to us, “Gali said.
With Christmas and New Year approaching, the county’s health director, Dr. Barbara Fair warned people to gather in groups and avoid traveling the area.
But he acknowledged that many would ignore the warnings. Those who travel the county and mingle with others requested that they be kept separate for 10 days when they return to avoid spreading the virus to others.
At least 6,155 Covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the county, although the state figure is 6,499.
“This coronavirus has increased our lives, our daily routines,” Ferrer said. “People need to sacrifice a lot to face the catastrophic economic loss.”
