A popular holiday holiday in the state, the “cannabis sandwich” includes raw ground beef on bread with sliced onions, salt and pepper.
But, “Eating raw meat is never recommended because it may contain bacteria,” the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) said.
Said in a tweet on Saturday.
The DHS, which said it issues the reminder annually, elaborated on its warning in another social media post.
The state health department wrote on Facebook, “It’s time for our annual reminder that you need to go through a # holiday tradition: raw meat sandwiches, sometimes called tiger meat or cannibal sandwiches,” the state health department wrote on Facebook.
“Many Wisconsin families consider them a holiday tradition, but eating them carries the risk of Salmonella, E. coli O 157: H7, Campylobacter and Listeria bacteria that can make you sick. (And, no, no matter where you live your Buy beef!). “
Health officials added that ground beef should always be cooked at an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a blog post in 2018, “There are hundreds of people in the Midwest who get sick every holiday season after you have been brutally eaten by soldiers.”
According to the Wisconsin DHS website, there have been eight raw meat outbreaks in Wisconsin since 1986, including the Salmonella outbreak that affected more than 150 people in December 1994.
The website says, “It is important to know that eating this type of food is not without risk.”
