The weekly average of new cases of COVID-19 reaches a record; Percentage of positive upward trend


MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The percentage of COVID-19 positive cases is rising again after a backlog of 17,000 negative tests caused a significant decrease in the percentage of positive cases earlier this week.

The Department of Health Services recorded 957 new positive cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, raising 6.7 percent of positive cases on Saturday to 9.6 percent, the third highest percentage of positive cases recorded in the last two weeks.

The seven-day average of recently reported cases remains above 900 for the third consecutive day. With the positive result of tests on Sunday, DHS registered an average of 930 new cases registered during the past week, the highest weekly average since the start of the pandemic.

DHS registered 9,978 more people who were tested for the virus, bringing the total number of people statewide to 866,376. Of those analyzed, 817,549 were negative for the virus.

With Sunday’s numbers counted, the cumulative total of confirmed COVID-19 cases has reached 48,827 in Wisconsin. DHS reports that 77.8 percent of people with the virus have recovered while 20.4 percent of cases are still active.

A new death was recorded on Sunday and 26 additional hospitalizations were recorded due to COVID-19. Total deaths in Wisconsin as a result of COVID-19 now totals 892.

DHS reports that the current daily testing capacity is 24,156. There are 83 laboratories conducting tests and an additional 24 laboratories planning to conduct tests.
