Quarterback Alex Smith, who won the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award to help the Washington football team win the NFC East title, was announced by the franchise on Friday.
Washington coach Ron Rivera said in a statement that the team had approved the request to release Smith after the two met earlier this week.
“I had the opportunity to meet with Alex Smith this week and we had a very honest and real discussion,” Rivera said in a statement issued by the team. “We had a chance to reflect on the 2020 season and talk about moving forward next year. After that meeting, we decided that it would be best for both sides to move forward and we would request Alex’s release.
