The Mountain West Conference said in a statement on Friday that the game had been canceled and that the official status of the game would be determined at a later date.
The stadium said the team decided not to make the decision following comments made by Noah Cockett, president of Utah State University, about the religious and cultural background of the team’s interim head coach, Frank Mail.
The comments came on Tuesday, when C-Cat was part of the ZoomCall, while Mail’s candidacy for a head football coaching job was discussed.
“The university will take the time to meet with the players and listen to their concerns in an open dialogue so that it can pay attention to them.” The school said.
“Utah State football players have decided to withdraw from our game against Colorado State due to ongoing inequality and biased issues between players, coaches and the USU administration,” the team said in a statement to the stadium.
“On Tuesday, December, the Utah State University Football Football Leadership Council held a zoom meeting with USU President Noel K. Kate and Athletic Director John Hartwell. Frank Mail voiced our support. In response to our comment, his primary concern was his religious and cultural background. The players, stating their different beliefs and backgrounds, then jumped to the defense of Coach Frank Mail. “
“We want to make our message clear that this program has nothing to do with the recent appointment of head coach Blake Anderson,” the team said in a statement at the stadium. “We are confident he is an excellent coach; we look forward to meeting him and his staff. We are highlighting the ongoing problems of inequality and the desire to build a better future for the community of Logan and Utah State University.”
