A Swedish mother arrested on suspicion of holding her son hostage for nearly three decades has been released, but authorities say no evidence has emerged that he was arrested against his will.
After a 70-year-old woman was detained earlier this week, a relative found a man in a 40-year-old apartment in Henning’s apartment in a state of disarray, the BBC reported.
He had almost no teeth, was covered with sores, and was barely able to speak or walk, according to Swedish outlets.
But prosecutors said he had no evidence that his mother had taken him hostage.
“We have not received any indication that he has been stopped, tied up or physically prevented from leaving the scene. “There is no indication that there are vacancies,” Stockholm lawyer Emma Olson told Agence France-Presse.
“The man himself said it was up to him if he wanted to leave the apartment.”
The man is believed to have been there for 28 years when he was expelled from school, the outlets said.
Olson said social services are now investigating the case, which includes reports that he was expelled from school when he was 12 years old.
“One can question her eligibility as a single mother, but now she has to focus on social services,” Olson said.
