There is no shortage of ways to consume news in 2020, which is part of my problem. There are countless podcasts, newsletters, websites, etc. POLITICS AND COVID – 19 are predominant the news, though. Sometimes I want to read about it non-COVID –19 and news about politics, like what does Microsoft do or what’s the latest from Peloton? I found that one of my new favorite apps on macOS and iOS is the Stocks app.
With iOS 13 and macOS Catalina, the Stocks app was redesigned to include curated news from Apple News. As you follow various businesses in the app, Apple News will pull relevant news about it as you scroll through your list. The stories will lean heavily on the business aspect of the news more than the recent rumors about Apple, Google, Tesla, etc.
I appreciate how this app works, because I can view a high-level business overview in the top section, but then drill down to my favorite companies. By following the companies I do not have to follow the sources, but Apple News handles this through the Stocks app. I will often read an article from a publication that I have never heard of or is not on my daily reading list, so it is perfect to stay up to date without having to spend long periods of time searching through various news outlets, etc.
As Apple evolves the Stocks app into future iOS and macOS versions, there’s one thing I would like Apple to do, but it would be a massive shift in functionality. Why can’t I buy individual shares through the Stocks app? I have used Robinhood in the past, and although the interface is easy to use, it requires me to use a second app.
Even if Apple did not want to be in the stockbroking industry, they could build a Stocks API that would allow companies like Robinhood to join the Stocks app to view my current stock portfolio, enable me to buy / sell stocks, and so on. Apple would not process these transactions, but it would use Robinhood’s API to process the transactions. I’m sure it will confirm multiple levels that the user understands that Apple can not support these transactions, it’s real money, and the money is not FDIC insured.
Wrap-up on Stocks app
If you want a way to view business news while avoiding politics and COVID-19 at the same time, start spending some more time in Apple’s Stock app. With the re-introduction of iOS 13, it has become a daily use app for me, as I learn more about companies whose products I use and have in stock. I would like Apple to develop an API in the future to allow real-time purchases through apps like Robinhood.
