The state of Florida names Jordan Travis to start with QB against Notre Dame

Florida State will start Jordan Travis against Notre Dame on Saturday, making it the FSU’s third different starting quarterback this season.

Coach Mike Norwell said during his weekly news conference on Monday that Travis got the chance after his performance in a comeback win over Jacksonville State on Saturday.

Travis came to grips with Freshman Tate Roadmaker, who trailed the Seminoles 14-0, and gave the Spark a 4-2 victory, leading the Seminoles to five straight touchdown drives.

Travis finished 12-of-17 for 210 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 48 yards and a second score.

“Jordan, through that performance and the work he has put in, has established himself for the start of this week and there is an opportunity to get out there and play the way he is able to play the game,” Norwell said. “I’m excited to be able to assume that role this week and make the most of it.”

Travis, a redshirt sophomore, is facing injuries from a fall, which is one reason he wasn’t in the mix for a quarterback job at the start of the season. Even in the week leading up to the Jacksonville State game, Norwell estimated that Travis only takes 20 snaps throughout the week, as he works to stay healthy.

P te James Blackman started as the No. 1 quarterback of the year, but after an ineffective performance in the loss to Miami, the roadmaker switched Blackman to the starting lineup last week.

The coaches did not mention the injuries that Travis suffered, only that he was not 100%. But when the coach asked him if he could go on Saturday, he said yes and gave most of the opportunity.

“Jordan has done a really good job; you can tell what he did during the quarantine and a lot of the things he was able to do on his own,” Norwell said. “We’re excited about him coming back, and some of the things he was able to do at the start of the season, despite the limited recurrence, speak well of where his continued growth could go and what it could be.”
