The South African COVID-19 type was found again in Santa Clara County

The worrying South African strain of the Covid-19 virus, which appears to be more contagious and more resistant to some vaccines, has once again surfaced in Santa Clara County.

Unlike the first case, found in February, this new case is not travel related and is believed to have resulted from a community transition. Health officials did not provide further details.

“This last case confirms that we have a community transition, and reminds us not to put our guard down in the midst of this epidemic,” said Dr. D’Anne, Santa Clara County Health Officer and Director of Public Health. One line.

“Given national trends, we are operating under the assumption that these types were circulating at some level in our communities.”

This is the fourth case reported in California. In February, authorities announced the discovery of the case in Santa Clara County by an adult who had traveled internationally, but who separated after showing symptoms. Another February case has come to light in Alameda County. Officials have not reported the source of the fourth case.

The South African type is able to exclude the AstraZeneca vaccine, although Moderna and the other two vaccines developed by Johnson and Johnson offer little protection.

But despite his fears, this South African variable has not been able to gain much traction in the United States. U.S. in South Carolina in January. Found for the first time in, only 142 cases have been found in 25 states.

In contrast, two other strains – one that has emerged in California, another imported from the United Kingdom – are a cause for widespread concern.

One, now called the West Coast Strain, is thought to be 20% more transmissible than the original rotating variable. The second, imported from the United Kingdom, is thought to be as transmissible as 50%. The South African variant is thought to be about 50% more contagious.

There have been 6,628 California cases of West Coast stress reported. As of mid-February, it accounts for more than half of all sequential samples in California, more than a third of Nevada samples, and a quarter of Arizona samples.

This week the CDC declared home-grown stress a “variety of anxiety,” showing its ease of infection and its ability to hide the body’s immune system.

375 California cases of the variant have been reported from the United Kingdom. But it is growing elsewhere. It has been found in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and is on track to become an influential variable in the country.

In Santa Clara County, the UK has 15 cases involving this type.

Last Saturday, California filed its first case of its dangerous type from Brazil. It is not known how the San Bernardino County patient became infected. This strain is unique from the other variant of Brazil, which is found in the Gulf region but is considered less dangerous.
