The royal family’s favorite books, with picks from Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton, and more

We are all entertaining ourselves much more these days, and what better way to spend the hours than with our nose buried in a good book? Here are some royal family recommendations: between Dickens’ novel Camilla can’t get enough of, the nonfiction work that inspired Kate Middleton’s garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, and the modern classic that Meghan Markle turns a and again, there is something for everyone.

In 2019 Kate partnered with a pair of landscape architects to design a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show. The outdoor space, which followed the theme “Back to Nature”, was created with children in mind. It was inspired in part by Last child in the forest, which Kate and the architects had read.

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom

In her days before royalty, Meghan had a blog called “The Tig”. Although it is now extinct (and has been since it joined the royal family), much of it is still accessible through the Internet Archive and elsewhere online. In a post, the now Duchess highlights some required readings, including The four Agreements. “My mother gave me a copy of this book when I was 13,” he wrote, “and to this day, I constantly go back to Don Miguel Ruiz’s classic to find the simplest ways to simplify his life.” (Yes, this one also works as a recommendation from Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.)

The little Prince

Another book that Meghan recommended on her blog is The little Prince. “I have always been obsessed with this book, and specifically The Little Fox,” she wrote. “Even if I don’t revisit the entire existential text (masked as a children’s book), The Little Fox chapter uncovers a truth in me that is always worth checking out.”

During the early days of the coronavirus lockdown, the Duchess of Cornwall published a list of books she liked, explaining that “many of us find solace in reading” in “these difficult times when we are isolated from those we love.” Among them was a classic certificate: Dickens A tale about two cities. “This is a wonderful romantic and family love story in the face of the violence of the French Revolution,” Camilla said of the novel. “It is one of my favorite Charles Dickens books and IMHO one of the best!”

The Architect’s Apprentice

Also among Camilla’s pandemic recommendations was The Architect’s Apprentice. The duchess declared it “a magical and colorful tale set in the heyday of the Ottoman Empire.”

Harry potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Camilla has previously revealed that Prince Charles likes to read Harry Potter series to her grandchildren. “He does all the voices, because he’s a brilliant impersonator … But he sits down and everyone sits down with him,” he said. “I always think they are going to toss and turn in bed, but they are delighted.” “(Unfortunately, there is no recording of Charles himself reading the books, however we will continue to hope for a future audiobook.)

Emma

At the beginning of the pandemic, Kensington Palace also took a look inside Kate’s office, which revealed that she has a collection of penguin cloth classics designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith (including titles like Emma Sense and Sensibility, The Baskerville Houndand Middlemarch) in his desk.
