The University of Oregon and Oregon State University announced Friday that the nickname they use for their rivalry game will change as scrutiny over symbols and statues of the Civil War and the Royal Confederacy has increased since early June.

“We will accept members of the university community, alumni, student athletes, and friends of the state of Oregon to assist in a collaborative process with the University of Oregon to consider other names for this historic rivalry.”

The rivalry between the two schools dates back to 1894 when the soccer teams of the two schools first met. The first Civil War reference was used in 1929 and became the nickname in 1937. It was previously known as the Oregon Classic or the State Championship Game.
