The restoration of the boated statue draws ridicule in Spain

Go up, “Monkey Jesus.” The latest in a series of attempts at a fantastic art restoration collection to hit Spain has been spotted in the northern city of Palencia.

A statue outside a building on the city’s historic historic main street has been dismantled after a mysterious restoration attempt to repair its broken head.

Local artist Antonio Capel took a look at the work he did on Friday and uploaded photos to Facebook that drew plenty of quick online attention.

“He looks like a cartoon character,” Capel wrote in the post.

Capel, whose studio is located around the statue’s road, told CNN he did not find out who carried it out, or who carried it out.

He said crowds of people were gathering to see the statue after his photos were rounded up online and in the Spanish media.

Capel told CNN that he doesn’t understand why amateur restorers think they can take on these projects, or why the people responsible for the artwork authorize the work.

“I don’t understand why they allow it,” Capel told CNN. “It doesn’t seem normal to me.”

The Conservators and Restorators, a professional association in Spain, also spoke about the work.

“This #is Not Restoration,” Institute Tweeted. “It’s a non-professional intervention.”

Capel believes the restoration of the effort in 2012 is worse than the famous job on Jesus’ flaking fresco on a church wall in the city of Borja.

Amateur restorer Cecilia Gimenez was widely criticized for her work, but it has turned into a fantastic success story.

Not only “Monkey Jesus”, as it has become known, which has caused a stir in the internet, but it has also attracted thousands of visitors to Borja.

In 2018, the backed restoration of a 16th-century polychrome statue of St. George at St. F. Michael’s Church in Estella, a town in the Navarre region, sparked outrage among art experts.
