Named for Melody Hubson, Hubson College Ledge will be built on the site of Wilson College Ledge. Princeton’s residential colleges offer accommodation and meals to students.
The residential college lodge that will now take Hobson’s name was originally named after former Princeton president Woodrow Wilson. The school said the name was first introduced to the college earlier this year after Wilson’s “racist ideology and policies” made it an “inappropriate name” following a decision by the university’s board of trustees.
Wilson once called racial segregation a “benefit” and said slaves were “happy and well cared for.” He also refused to admit black men and tried to exclude them from school history.
“When I was approached about this opportunity last year, I was most pressured to change the name of a black woman who would not have supported my entry three decades ago and what she represents for a future payday. Princeton video.
“I hope my name reminds future generations of students – especially those who are black and brown and the ‘firsts’ in their families – that they too belong. Changing the name of Wilson College College Our past does not have to be our future. “
The university said the Hobson and Hobson / Lucas Family Foundation – named after Hobson and her filmmaker husband George Lucas – made the “lead gift” for the new building. Construction on the site is scheduled to begin in 2023 and be completed in 2026, the school said.
The name change follows the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement and calls for racial justice following the continued deaths of black people at the hands of the police. Schools, companies and institutions are trying to reconcile racist behavior not only by recognizing some of their troubled history, but also by changing the names of buildings and logos.
Schools, including Virginia Tech and Duke University, have either renamed the buildings or renamed the new building as Black Alumni.
