The Prince Estate releases an unreleased song ‘I Could Never Take Your Man’s Place (1979 version)’


The Prince Estate partnered with Warner Records to release the unreleased song “I Never Never Take The Place Of Your Man (Version 1979)” today (July 16).

The song will be featured in the upcoming expanded reissue of the pop star’s iconic ninth album. Sign o ‘the Times this autumn. Prince originally recorded the song, which is voiced nine times, in Studio A at Hollywood Sound Recorders on May 23, 1979 during sessions for his second self-titled album in 1979. He retrieved it from the vault and re-recorded it in 1986. with a guitar solo and an updated sound that made it to the 1987 album, which peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200.

“I Could Never Take Your Man’s Place (1979 Release)” is the oldest recording of the deluxe reissue of Signature o ‘the Times, which is available for pre-order here before it officially arrives on September 25. The remastered album features 62 more unreleased tracks and a two-hour concert video filmed at his private Pahasley Park park in Chanhassen, Minnesota, on December 31, 1987.

The Prince Estate and @WarnerRecords are pleased to present the original recording and handwritten lyrics for “I Never Never Take the Place of Your Man,” a song Prince wrote during sessions for his self-titled 1979 album. It was recorded on Hollywood Sound Recorders, Studio A on May 23, 1979, and is the oldest recording in the upcoming Super Deluxe edition of Sign O ‘The Times. The track was retrieved from the vault by Prince in June 1986 and re-recorded, with Prince adding a guitar solo and updating the sound. That updated version was included in the abandoned Dream Factory and Crystal Ball projects, and was eventually released on Sign O ‘The Times. The new expanded Sign O ‘The Times reissue will be available on September 25 through all physical, digital and streaming partners, with the classic album remastered for the first time.
